...THE BEFORE, THE BEGINNING, STARTS NOW...

Before Time Exists was idealized through a constellation of artistic encounters and exchanges between the artist Andreia Duarte and indigenous leaders, thinkers and artists such as Ailton Krenak, Davi Kopenawa, Denilson Baniwa, Jaider Esbell, Naine Terena, Zahy Guajaraja and many others.

These meetings gave rise to exchanges that illustrated desires for the scene in drafts that established the work’s concept especially between 2019 and 2021. All the refinement was materialized with the coming into being collective of creation and production that begins to tread together in August 2021.

BETWEEN

REAL

AND FICTION

NOTHING MATTERS

TO US!

BETWEEN

REAL AND FICTION

NOTHING MATTERS

TO US!

In Before Time Exists we drive our attention to the crossing of different worlds in dialogue about plural ways of being in life. We have no interest in figuring what is real or fiction on stage, because there is no commitment to a truth in creation.

The proposal demystifies the text’s traditional role in theater, understanding dramaturgy as the set of senses proposed by all scenic elements. We seek theatricality in the subject’s trajectories and in the act of playing a scene that points out cosmopolitical and collective issues, tensioning with the exclusivism in artistic production.

People in nature, Creative arts, Art

The show is played by artists that bring creation in life and are less involved with the idea of setting languages. Our composition flows in different manners such as visual sound projections, music, plastic arts, performance, orality, singing and dance.

All can happen in this creative space: the wind moves the scene and the industrial fan opens wide reality. The work faints with scenery whenever stagehand objects are brought or taken, in a constantly transformed scenic dwell that reinvents time in theatrical making itself.

CREATIVE PROCESS

2021´s Encounters

We entered the rehearsal room bringing notions that pointed out clues to the first scenic materials. We held reflective meetings online and kept on with the artists Andreia Duarte, Kenia Dias and Lucas Pradino performing an intensive creative process in person.

At that time the skin, bone and muscle principles emerged in space. The suspension of time, the views of the body, the memory reduced to life itself and the question:

Is it still possible to negotiate with the wind?

Is it still possible

   to negotiate with the wind?

   Is it still possible

to negotiate

          with the wind?

Is it still possible to negotiate with the wind?

Is it still possible

         to negotiate with the wind?

The path was presented online in two meetings, through video pills and chat that generated reflections among the whole team.

We guided the path to an immersion where the team and artists had an encounter for collective and creative experiences that put the show together.

The immersion took place in October 25 to 29, 2021 from 10 am to 6 pm in the SP Escola de Teatro with the participation of the artists Andreia Duarte, Denilson Baniwa, Jaider Esbell, Kenia Dias, Lucas Pradino, Rodrigo Gava and Zahy Guajajara.

JAIDER

ESBELL

The Macuxi artist, Jaider Esbell, died on November 2nd, 2021: a week after the Before Time Exists creative immersion.

Our silence remains in time.

We recognize ourselves in the Jaider Esbell being’s motion that brought the power of indigenous artistic autonomy in the commitment to life.

ON TIME

The indigenous leader Ailton Krenak explains that in myth time there is no anguish of certainty about the future of life; for there is no guarantee of duration. It is part of a magical temporality that, like a door, opens and invites us to cross and interact in a collective experience.

This extended time experience allows an affective relation that expands the possibilities of communication between existences. It is a place of connection where wind, animal, vegetable, spirits and humans are beings that own their habitats, food, personality and that relate to each other.

Even in urban society’s urgent time where all chronology is intended for capitalist production, ancestry is active. When anthropocentrism threatens the world, degrading the environment, polluting air, burning forests or destroying rivers, all the beings inhabiting the planet get upset and can take revenge on humans spreading diseases or causing earthquakes and hurricanes.

Given the chronological time that reduces memory to individualism and obliterates the first meaning of existence, that is, the air we breathe, the water we drink, the natural origin of everything life is; we ask ourselves: is it still possible to negotiate with the world?

Even before time existed, the original distant memory present in the indigenous peoples always showed the complexity of life and the necessary reciprocity of the existences on the planet. So these people revered the beauty of the world in their bodies, dancing and singing to get into the rhythm of the planet.

Meetings in 2022 and premiere

WE LET TIME PASS...

This is how we were able to return to the material created in the 2021’s immersion.

Many scenic clues were built revealing  the wind’s action in our bodies and the power of the word on our mouths. We saw the protagonism of the jaguar, the expanded memory and the escapes game in the bodies.

We recognize the dramaturgical continuity in the work, important to be resumed in the realization that we organize in three stages, potentiated especially through the institutional partnerships with the Biblioteca Mário de Andrade, Goethe-Institut and Mitsp - International Theatre Exhibition.
